Alkaline water has been linked with many health benefits, that range from regulating the body’s pH to preventing chronic ailments and boosting immunity.
What kind of water are you drinking? And why does it matter?
Health experts recommend drinking 2-3 litres of water every day to eliminate acidic waste and other toxins from the body. The actual meaning of pH is “power of hydrogen.” pH is the measure of alkalinity or acidity of a substance on the scale of 0 to 14. Anything above 7.0 is considered to be alkaline, and anything below this level is acidic in nature.
Technically speaking, a fluid contains both H+ (hydrogen) and OH- (hydroxide) ions. pH is the measure of the amount of hydrogen ions (H+) in a fluid. If a solution has more hydrogen ions than OH- ions, it will be acidic (low pH); for example, orange juice, lemon juice, vinegar, coke and black coffee. Similarly, a solution with more OH- ions will be alkaline (high pH); for example, baking soda.
Pure water has a neutral pH value of 7. And alkaline water will have a pH value higher than normal drinking water.
Balance is the key
pH levels in the body are not constant. These values vary from fluid to fluid and system to system. Each bodily function is controlled by a set of bio-chemical reactions, which require a certain pH to work. For example, a healthy skin has a pH value of 5.5. This slightly acidic environment is necessary to destroy germs that try to invade the body via the skin.
However, the digestive tract has pH values that vary depending on the stage of digestion. The stomach secretes hydrochloric acid or HCl to ensure proper digestion of food and also to destroy harmful pathogens in the gut. Before this semi-digested food enters the small intestine, the pancreas discharges alkaline fluids to neutralize the acid that can otherwise damage the intestines. Mucosa in these parts cannot withstand a high acidic environment, thus the pH in this lies in the range of 7.0 to 8.5.
One thing is certain, both acids an important role in the body. So, the goal is to maintain the overall pH within the optimum range required by the body to carry out its functions. And usually our body is very efficient in achieving this goal on its own.
The problem arises when we are overexposed to acidic elements in amounts more than our body is naturally equipped to deal with – resulting in acidosis.
Unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress, environmental exposure and overuse of antibiotics and other drugs, are some factors that work together toward creating a perpetually acidic environment in the body.
pH imbalance: Root cause of disease and illness
